We are currently living in the “Information Age”, and with the explosion of mass media (and now, social media) it was become more important than ever to be able to understand, evaluate, summarize, and filter the huge amounts of information we receive every day.
In this 75-hour course, students will develop their ability to discuss and analyze news reports, feature stories, and documentaries. While the purpose of these texts is often to inform, they may contain elements that explain, persuade, narrate, or argue a point of view as well.
Required Materials:
- Textbook: English to Inform
(available at the bookstore)
- 3-ring binder with loose leaf, for course work and taking notes.
- A dictionary!
Evaluation:
Your final grade will be based on the following tasks:
Part I:
Read and analyze a news report ... November 18
Part II:
Write an informative report based on the article in Part I
... November 19
Part III:
Oral presentation of your informative report from Part II
... November 20
Attendance and participation are essential for success in this course. Students are expected to arrive ON TIME for their classes.
Students are also expected to bring their own copy of the textbook to class every day, as well as all other materials they need.
