“English & Persuasion”

In this 75-hour course students will develop their ability to discuss and analyze a variety of persuasive texts, including advertisements, editorials, commentaries, opinions, and letters of complaint. The social function of these texts is often to promote a product or ideology, or to influence personal or social behavior.
Required Materials:
- Textbook: English & Persuasion (available at the bookstore)
- 3-ring binder with loose leaf, for course work and taking notes.
- A dictionary!
Evaluation:
Your final grade will be based on the following:
1. Writing Exam: Write a letter of complaint about a print ad
March 22, 2023
2. Listening and Oral Exam: Students present a review (oral opinion) of an ad (video) viewed in class.
Video viewing and notes: March 20, 2023
Oral Presentations: March 21, 2023
Attendance and participation are essential for success in this course. Students are expected to arrive ON TIME for their classes.
Students are also expected to bring their own copy of the textbook to class every day, as well as all other materials they need.
