Poetry is an important form of human expression, whose primary function is to depict the human experience in a creative and imaginative way - and to stimulate a response from the reader/listener.
In this 25-hour course, students will discuss and analyze traditional and free-verse poems and songs. By the end of the course, students will use their knowledge of the elements and social functions of poetry to both interpret and present songs and poems.
Course Outline:
I. Course Introduction: What is poetry?
- types of poetry and poetry’s role in society
II. How it’s Made
- the elements of poetry (rhyme, rhythm, and the use of figurative language)
III. What’s the Meaning of All This?
- analyzing poetry: themes and messages of poems; poetry’s impact on the reader
IV. Bringing a Poem to Life
- reciting poetry: how musicality and meter can enhance meaning and experience
Evaluation:
An interpretation of an assigned text (written): September 10
A presentation of a poem or song (oral): September 11
Attendance and participation are essential for success in this course.
Students are expected to arrive ON TIME for their classes.
Students are also expected to bring their own copy of the textbook to class every day, as well as all other materials they need.
