Go to the NFB website and watch the short film Bob’s Birthday, then complete the following exercises.
a.) Briefly describe each of the following story elements from the film.

b.) Chart the plot of the film on a Plot Graph. Include: exposition, inciting incident, rising conflict, climax, and resolution.
c.) Animation is a type of film making generally used for children’s stories, or comedies. “Bob’s Birthday” is obviously not a film for children, but would you describe it as a comedy? Why or why not?
d.) A film’s “style” is the look and feeling of the film, which is created by colours, costumes, props, sound, cinematography, editing, etc. A film’s style can help to reveal and enhance theme.
Describe the style of the film*.
How does the film’s style contribute to its deeper theme?
* Remember, style is different from genre!
Genre is like a category, which gives clues to the audience about what kind of film it will be. For example, love stories are about falling in love; sci-fi is about technology and the future; Westerns are about life in the American West.
